Eh, I've been through a week of customer support, and I can't get a good response.

A lot of web hosts provide multiple FTP accounts. Most of these hosts have preset privilieges for these additional FTP accounts. The additional accounts usually only have access to a certain directory. (for example, user named 'test' would only have access to the /test directory)

now, we have a rather large design team, and we can't risk everyone having the same master account. And the last few hosts we've gotten cant seem to work the way we want it.

So, the last thing I was told, it was technically impossible. Some UNIX thing, I have no idea.

Is there ANY host that can create the kind of FTP accounts I want, or are all these hosts being jerks?

Your hosts are just being jerks.

It sounds like you just want a directory that all of your designers can share and accesss. That should be pretty simple. Make all your users belong to a certain group, create a folder belonging to the group, and set the permissions accordingly. It's not hard at all, and is certainly doable on both Mac servers and UNIX servers.

Edison, NJ, huh? I went to Rutgers.

Anyway - who is your web host?

While what the other poster said is doable, another thing you can do is just create another account that has less powers and give everyone on the team that account/password (this is providing that 1 "user" can be logged on more than once at a time).

Almost any web host that gives you FTP access will let you do that.

www.globalhosting.com

it stinks, its slow, and wont let me do the FTP thing. Keep in mind these hosts just give me a useless control panel, which has as many options as an lightswitch.

we were looking at www.your-site.com, cuz someone here reccommended it, but their customer support denies that I will be able to do so.

If you (or someone who works for you) is willing to do a little bit of Unix work, you can set this up yourself without too much trouble - given that you're able to host your own server. I have just such a system running on several of my servers.

What you want to do is get a hold of proftpd (http://www.proftpd.org/) and install it. For the most flexibility, you can combine it with the mod_sql capability (which uses a MySQL database for user management so you don't have to create "real" Unix users for FTP) and then add/delete users from a web interface (this is what I've done).

You can get this running under MacOSX, but it's not easy. Much easier to get it running under Linux or FreeBSD.

O.k. it says on this page: http://support.globalhosting.com/cp.shtml
of your webhosting service that you can

FTP Tools:

* Add FTP Accounts
* Add Anaymous FTP
* Add FTP Message
* FTP Session Control

(you might want to tell them they spelled anonymou wrong - you'd think they'd know how to spell it being that you have to type anonymous correctly to get into anonymous FTP sites) but I digress..

It LOOKS like you can add FTP accounts to your main account and then use "FTP Session Control" (permissions?) to make the FTP account not have the same rights as the main one that you have. You might have to login to your master account using SSH and do a little command-line stuff to restrict those users. I have a cheap webhost and have the same stupid control panel crap.

nope, Session controls just makes sure that the anonymous users cant access certain parts. Useless for me, cuz I can't even control my own users! WTF is up with that?

and here's the FTP control panel:

Nice and bare... and totally useless...
