I'm trying to learn how to build a basic database driven site. I've tried a few different methods all of which have failed fairly early on in the process.

We have a copy of UltraDev at work and I'll admit I took it home to get some practice...but I couldn't even configure it..I just couldn't get a connection going w/ my webserver...I don't feel stupid....

Then I went to the Dreamweaver Exchange to check out some extensions and tried Lasso for Dreamweaver...my host doesn't support Lasso but that doesn't matter because I couldn't even get it to work in my authoring environment.

So I'm right back where I started....what I'm asking is if any of you have any advice as to how to best approach this.

I have Filemaker pro to use for the database creation...and I can use UltraDev for the developement.....but what else

..do I need to set anything up on the webserver before I try to make a connection?
...Will Ultradev work in Classic or do I have to do everything in 9
...and if I do everything in 9..does that mean I can't test locally
...are there any tips for configuring UltraDev initially?
...what language do you prefer to program with?
...any good "getting started" tutorials.

Sincerely,
Floundering & Frustrated

Check out PHP as a scripting language and MySQL as a back-end database. This pair of applications runs well on OSX, as well as on any flavor of Unix or Windows. You will find lots of resources and documentation on the web, and best of all they are both FREE!
www.php.net www.mysql.com

There are several packages for OSX (on OSX related download sites) that will install and integrate both applications with the Apache webserver already present in OSX - I don't recall the exact packages but a search for "PHP MYSQL" should find 'em.

I've built several production web sites using these, including a high-volume job board that generates several hundred thousand web queries a day, and they are rock solid reliable. I think there is also plug-in for UltraDev for PHP/Mysql.

this is a great introduction tutorial into the above Build your own Database Driven Website using PHP & MySQL,

and remember that the great thing about the 2 above technologies means that there is ah heap of opensource scripts that you can mod to your own whim as and when you need, rather than start from the base up

Thanks gentlemen...what a helpful bunch. I definately owe you multiple six-packs.

How does a WYSIWYG editor fit into the picture....and if you guys use UltraDev in Classic..how is it hooking it up to an OS X database..what other options do I have?

PS. Philzilla..I've had great success with the include help you gave me but I'm being pulled in so many directions I haven't yet tried using it in Flash...my issue with that is how to get the included text to appear in a specific (pixel) font..just don't know

oh my god, please don't use ultradev to write your code!

there's a book called php/mysql web development (or something similar).
read it on the toilet. you'll be much better off writing your own code. ultradev is a disgrace.

maybe a bit late, but I agree with raman on writing your own code. that goes for html as well. but I have a hard time imagining that using ultradev could possibly be less of a hassle than just learning how to write it out. Programs have a dendency to write crap code.

Plus if you know how to write it, you know how to fix it when it breaks.

If you decide to go into doing your own code, I can recommend the tutorials at thickbook for getting to know php & mysql and after that a bunch at webmonkey.
Good luck!
