here they use UBB which is AFAIK written in perl. A php equivalent is phpBB which I prefer anyway to UBB. I take it you are after a forum or are you talking about www.MacNN.com rather than forums.MacNN.com - in which case I don't know. PHPNuke might be worth taking a look at but everytime I have looked at it I have decided it looks horribly complicated and doesn't do what I want it to do. phpBB however is an excellent forum.

i now have an ikonboard forum already that i love. i would like to know for macnn.com,i want to start doing news on the fly, and was wandering if they are using some sort of php browser based form of updating news, which i am pretty sure they do. i am trying to get a grip on php and mysql and i have noticed that a lot of the types of systems, like phpnuke, are not even to version 1 yet, that kind of scares me to rely on a version that hasn't reached step one yet. i trust that macnn.com is using something a little more solid, maybe not, but it would be cool to know what though so i can try it out. thanks again

I have written some scripts which basically take a phpBB thread and turn it into a 'news section', so that to add to the news section you just post to the thread. Which of course you can make totally private. phpBB is very stable and my scripts are AFAIK bug free. If you want me to send them to you I can. If ikon board uses an sql backend you could do the same thing with ikonboard, i would be happy to send my scripts as an example. (I am not exactly sure what state the scripts are in since I just wrote them for personal use). Of course there may be things which are more suitable for your use but this was a quick hack for me as phpBB has so much functionality already and all I need to do is draw out the necessary information from the database that I want to display, providing me with masses of flexibility. I mean I have a news section, a 'what people are working on' section (it's on a project development site), a 'most recent posts' section and so on. Once you know a bit of php and sql it is very easy to make a whole dynamic front page basically driven from a load of BB threads.

I'm not sure what macnn uses, but sitebox is pretty cool. I've actually never used it, but it seems to have some nice features. Alsot, geeklog appears to be pretty scalable and stable. Check out hotscripts.com for some more leads. Post back here if you find one that you really like. I prefer to struggle through the process myself, making my content management system from scratch (I learn alot more that way), but to each his own
