sudo mysqld

starts the database as root so you don't get the permission denied error.

use this startup item so it starts on system startup: mysql-startupitem.pkg.tar.gz

it was written by Marc Liyanage. For more go here:

Guys, thanks for your input.... what I'm having trouble getting my head around is that not only does OS X have users, but MySQL too. I got it started with user root, but now trying to connect (as root), I get a "Warning: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (13) in /Users/mike/Sites/test2.php on line 5" in my browser. It must be a permissions thing, but I need help! The readme's are gigs big, and not written for beginners. Can anyone give me anymore pointers please?

Once I'd got it installed, I gave up and used PHPMyAdmin. Works fine for the vast majority of tasks, and any others are easily solved with a little PHP script

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.
