I know this is somewhat off topic, but I have been looking at certification as a possible way of enhancing my job prospects. I know that you mostly see certification in the technician fields, so I am unsure of it's value. The SCJP test looks doable with some study, but I don't want to invest the time and money if I will still be unemployed afterward. Thanks.

I will tell you.

The SCJP is hard. It is designed to be hard. I passed, but I thought "Damn that was hard."

As a result, if I ever meet anyone who is SCJP, I at least know that they have mastered the core concepts of the Java language and the Java platform.

So, I would say that it does help. But, nothing beats experience. Think of it as the type of thing that will distinguish you among otherwise equal candidates
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

I have to agree with Kristoff. I found it very helpful on my resume, even though my certification is from 1997. It is a nice endorsement from the company that created the language.

It is kind of trendy nowadays for people to downplay the usefulness of the test, but in the case when it does matter it is good to have.

When I took it it cost $150 (Developer cost $450), and well worth it.

Thanks for the replies. Still thinking about it some. Is there an opinion about the best study guide? I have seen several. Some of them are expensive. Thanks.

I didn't use a study guide for any of the tests - I just used the samples on Sun's edu site (sorry, I can't remember exactly where) and that gave me a real good idea of what kinds of things to focus on. It also helps that I develop in Java constantly, otherwise learning the class libraries could be daunting.
