OK I'm looking for recommendations for webhosting. I need to have support for PHP and MySQL with at the very very least one database. I would like to pay the absolute minimum for the service since the organisation whose website it is, is a youth group so there isn't bottomless pits of money for a website.

I have done some research already and came up with this but if anyone has found any deals which are better or better yet had experience with this hosting company, please let me know.

Thanks on advance

I would caution against going solely by price. There are plenty of "el cheapo" hosting companies who have no support, may disappear tomorrow, and live on the edge of sleaziness.

I offer web hosting as a service to my clients but you should just check out my provider directly: http://www.pair.com No problems at all in the past 3 years.

Very true. Many of those really cheap ones just disappear and change names. They don't care if you paid for a month and only got a day.

If you are looking for a good solid webhosting company I would go with Hostway. I did a lot of research before choosing them. They have been around since 1996. And they have a good number of plans, the one I have is $19.95 unix, 10gb of traffic, 200 mb of space, PHP, PERL, mySQl database , phone and email support plus more. I've even noticed they underquote my web traffic when I check it. They get back to you very quickly through email. They actually just switched my setup from a windows 2000 server to a unix server in under 3 hours (they say it could take up to 24 hours). It all depends on what you are looking for but I think you get what you pay for in the long run.

i just signed on with www.ocssolutions.com (the paying side of 4gigs.com)

they have a basic plan for $4.95 and you get php and MySQL - i'm testing out pmachine and moveable type on it right now and they both work just fine (you have to email them after you sign up to tell them to set up your MySQL database since you're given a cobalt control panel/server, but customer service was very responsive and nice.) best of all, there is no "setup fee" or transfer fee to move your domain.

I've been with pair Networks for over 5 years. My account was (and still is, with newer hardware) hosted on their 14th server (chi.pair.com). They've grown a lot since then, but they're still the best value for my needs.

I host three sites of mine with karboneye (www.karboneye.com) and for 20 a month I get 100 MB of space, 10 e-Mails, 100 aliases, php, mysql, postgresql, ftp access, 5 GB transfer, good service, and they have a nice control panel in development so you can setup your account the way you like by yourself.

They are very fast with e-Mail response. Give them a shot.

try http://www.phpwebhosting.com

I have had my website there after moving it from webhost to webhost, and I haven't moved away from it. Here are the features and prices...

125MB storage + more free as needed
Un-metered traffic (OC12 connection)
Unmetered PHP3 Mailboxes
Unlimited Email addresses
Unlimited Auto-responders
Unlimited Email Forwards
Unlimited Mailing Lists
Your own MySQL database (more free upon request) with phpMyAdmin 2.2.2 pre-installed
Server Side Includes
PHP4 scripting (4.2.2)
Perl, Python, Ruby Scripting
Mod-Rewrite
GD, ImageMagick, FreeType2
Fully Configurable thru .htaccess
your own cgi-bin
password protected directories
Secure Shell Access (ssh)
FTP access
crontab access
most common unix utilities

$9.95/month, or you can pay yearly and get a slight discount ($9.18/month).

Like I said, I have had 0 problems with phpwebhosting, and they offer the best services I have seen anywhere for a great price, and they have been hosting me for close to 2 years now. I doubt they will die out like the users above suggest.

Be careful. I went with a $2.99 a month company and my site was getting slower and slower. I SSHed in one day and poked around and went up 1 directory higher than my websites and saw that there were tons and tons of directories that appeared to be porn sites.

You get what you pay for...
