Considering Apple has not made iPhoto Rendezvous enabled yet, maybe someone here can make a program where you choose a directory and the photos are shared with other people who are using the program, and they can copy the photos and stuff..

any takers?

So, what features should such an app have? Sharing just over Rendezvous or over internet as well? What should you be able to do on the client end, besides looking at the pictures and saving them?

they would be both client and servers, you designate a folder of pictures and it would go and take all the picture and put them into rows and thumbnails, double clicking on a picture would zoom it, control clicking would bring up a contextual menu, command clicking would download it to your web downloads folder (without having to select and click download from the toolbar)

The top would have a Title for the Folder and the client would look for other places and in a menu item list 'em..... there menu options to download and make desktop picture, download selected and make screen saver....other things

what the hey, throw in a chat client

well... putting together a proof of concept wasn't that hard, but I've been much too busy with work and other stuff lately. Perhaps I could find some time this weekend

I wouldn’t spend to much time on it if I where you...

My bet for Apples next Digital Hub Device is a Unit to connect to your TV/Entertainment system.

It would have a DVD player, Connect via Airport or Ethernet to your computer(s) and would give you access to your Photos, iTunes, Movies all via your TV/Stereo in your living room.

Apple already showed Rendezvous enabled version of iTunes. I really don’t need to play my wife’s tunes from my computer, but I would die to be able to access my music library from my stereo/TV!!

Other possibility would be Tivo style recording of TV show back to your computers HD, and even the possibility of playing Game Cube games (GameCube runs on PPS, and Nintendo DOES license to third parties...)

But then again, I could be wrong

Similar to Alex's feelings, I wouldn't want to put my own time into such a project. It seems like the next logical step to iPhoto. Then again, if someone doesn't make it, Apple may not realize the potential and then never do it. I suppose its a double edged sword.

yeah, i mean, once iTunes comes out with its Rendezvous sharing, iPhoto is the logical one to have this feature implemented next.

i just do not want to wait that long....

Not from me at least. I haven't done any work besides my initial proof of concept. Now that was really trivial - Rendezvous samples are available from Apple, O'Reilly and other places. After that, just use sockets or, as I did, distributed objects. Unfortunately I don't have that much spare time available, besides work and trying to maintain a social life, to justify more coding on this. Especially since I wouldn't really use it myself. If I could release a product as shareware and get something back from my invested time, I might reconsider. But I doubt that people would be willing to pay for this, considering there's so much software already for sharing stuff from your hard drive. Or am I wrong?

Even if there would be a market for a shareware program, it might not be worth it to invest the amount of time and energy that is required to produce a polished application if you suspect that Apple is going to compete with you sooner, rather than later.

There are few programs, however, that would share hard drives in this manner, with 0-configuration (unless the person has set a password) and just selecting the collection...

If you have the developer tools installed, just check out:

/Developer/Examples/Foundation/PictureSharingBrowser
and
/Developer/Examples/Foundation/PictureSharing

which are server and client.

Also, Apple itself will probably do something like that real soon now. So, don't waste your time. Or if you decide to do it anyway, start up from that example application provided by Apple.

There's a bug in the code, a release too much if I remember correctly. This hs been mentioned on Apples Cocoa list, and other places. You might search the list archives at lists.apple.com if you're interested in the fix.
