I am pretty new to all this web development stuff and I have a site that I would like to expand with a few extra features that are built into Apache, but the configuration file, located at /etc/httpd/httpd.conf, is being a b*tch. I am trying to turn on SSI but when I try to save the config file after the proper changes there's an error message that comes up that says "[ Cannot open file for writing ]". I am using PICO to edit the file. What am I doing wrong?

Only root can edit /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.

Use sudo pico to edit the file (it will ask you for your password before opening the file). That will let you use pico on the file as root.

Hey thanks for the help, but i feel pretty stupid. I don't know why I didn't add the sudo command. I knew it had to be edited by the root. I guess iI just wasn't thinking.

If you want your Users to have different functionality, don't forget to edit their .conf files in /etc/httpd/users/

I always forget that step and start swearing when my SSi's don't work
