im about to take a C programming class. does the Developer Tools have a C/C++ compiler or I should look for a 3rd party software like Metrowerks?

The Developer Tools ship with the GNU Compiler Collection, aka gcc. It should be all you need.

Well, there's no such thing as a GUI compiler really since the compilation process is not one that displays graphical information.. however, Project Builder, the IDE of the developer tools, uses GCC.

I've had the most sucess w/ vi and gcc when coding C, long ago and far away, but Project Builder SHOULD treat ya right.

Just FYI, but Project Builder uses the gcc compiler. It gives the exact same errors and the same level of optimization. PB just has a nice interface.
