I'm wondering if anyone knows how I would make one of those side scrolling picture strips. I want to have thumbnails of 15 or so pictures that can be viewed at full size by clicking on them.

How about giving an example as opposed to trying to explain what I am looking for.

Go to http://rad-e8.com/main.html and then click Design->Snow E2. There in the bottom right section of the page is what I am looking for. Something along those lines.
Just my $.02 :-)

Oooh, that site is pretty, but it uses flash for the feature and I know next to nothing about flash.

An easy way to do this would be to have two frames, a skinny one on the left with your thumbnails and a large one on the right that would show whatever image you clicked on in full size.

Something like this, only with thumbnails on the left and the full size images on the right.

Good luck.

Yes, it is pretty and that's why I want it!

I don't know enough flash to produce anything like that either, that's why I am hoping there is an alternate implementation that someone knows about.

I could do it a very standard way, which in the long run would work fine, but the cool flashish option is of course perferred. Look at it. It's so cool!

I think the static one the site shows is nice, but the sliding one is *completely* annoying. If you need more screenspace, have scrollbuttons. The sliding one makes me dizzy.

So you'd suggest a static viewer with scroll buttons? I have various sections of pictures that usually total about 20 or more. I can't fit them all on the screen, so I'm looking for a good thumbnail/single view solution. I liked the fancyness of the continuous scrolling, but it was a bit annoying to navigate through. It seemed a bit to fast and touchy, but I'm sure that a change of a parameter or two would fix that issue.

a *bit* annoying? Nope, sorry, those gesture navigations tend to be pretty impossible to work no matter what parameter you set. There are better ways to show 20 or so thumbnails, and worst case scenario, you break up the 20 into ten max per page or something. 20 is alot of thumbnails to load at once.

And, no I don't think a static scrollbar is the answer./

So then what would you suggest as a possible solution? The reason why I was thinking of using the moving scrollbar is so that visitors would realize that there are more than 5 or so pictures. If they see five static images, they might not notice the scroll buttons to view more pictures. You or I might understand how it works, but there are plenty of people who come to my site that barely know how to turn a computer on.

My last design had 5-7 full size image per page, with 5 or so pages per section. I want to get away fromt that layout. Plus, my new site design wouldn't work with that.

I need a solution that is visible on a page without having to scroll. We'll set a limit of needing to fit in a 750X500 pixel box. Any suggestions?

uhm...thumbnails, cropped images, some sort of remote control metaphor, i mean, the solutions are pretty abundant, just get creative about it.

how about if you had all 20 thumbnails small on the page, so you could see all, then when they mouse over them they enlarge to a viewable size (slightly larger) and when clicked, load into the main box at full size? you could do it so if you moused over box 2, all the other boxes in the line shifted up as box 2 expands.

Well, if you go to my site you can see how I did this:
http://homepage.mac.com/york28/frames.html
Go to "things to see". It's very simple and there is always the fear of a user not realizing that the frame has a scroll bar, but it works on just about any browser and doesn't need anything special. And if I need to add more pictures, all that has to be done is adding them to the frame on the right.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.
