I've been using Safari for a few days now, and i'd like to get some opinions on what you guys think of it. Here's some of mine.

Overall, i love the browser. I love the cocoa front end, which doesn't freeze up when it's rendering a page, like IE5 does. Scrolling speed and rendering speed is excellent. Being able to override which User Agent it sends out with the http headers is a very nice feature as well (you got to enable the debug menu for that).

The rendering engine is good. At least as good as Mozilla. I really thought it had been based on Mozilla, as there are several little quirks that render exactly the same as Mozilla. CSS support is excellent as well, almost as good as IE5, which i think has the best CSS support of any browser out there.

The main downside, and it is a massive downside, is Safari Flash support. Or lack of it more to the point. It's ****ing awful. I'm sure it uses the Quicktime plug in to render the flash, as i saw the Quicktime icon when i went to a flash website once. You'd be lucky to get 5 fps out of a flash movie that should run at 30fps. I hope this gets sorted in the final release.

Apart from that, i think it has a bright future. It's lean, fast and very capable.

What do you guys think?

It'll be fixed. This is a beta, and it's from Apple. I'm sure they've got enough clout to find the solution before it goes gold.

I for one am thrilled with Safari - it's quick and precise enough for 95% of my browsing and feels super-light and processor-friendy. I don't even mind not having autofill or auto-password entry on some pages, just for the sheer joy of smooth scrolling, quick rendering and stability (not one crash yet!)
Computer thez nohhh...

I really am enjoying Safari. It's so unobtrusive and zippy.

I am also pleased with its compliance to standards. Of course there are still bugs, but it was only released a week ago!

The Flash bug has apparently been resolved. Dave Hyatt is keeping a blog of the Safari development process and has announced that he and his team have fixed the problem: http://www.mozillazine.org/weblogs/h....html#90160374

I would assume that the Flash-friendly beta will be forthcoming.

For me, Safari is so nice that it is the first browser in three, four years to dethrone Explorer on my comp. I began surfing with Netscape (as many did, undoubtedly) and only jumped on the Explorer wagon with their version 4.5. I have tried to get off it since, but to no avail. I have extensively used Chimera, the only competitor for me, but it has never succeded in being my main browser, a feat of bravery Safari WAS able to, after just a few days of heavy duty. I'm very pleased with Apple.

I can't get Safari to use the QuickTime Plugin to render Flash; I tried.

Under the "Help" menu choose "Installed Plug-Ins"; that'll let you know what's installed and who's rendering what.

Well for web development there are a few problems I have with it.

1 - I need to disable Cache totally, It is a pain in the ass if the browser is showing me an old version of the file I am working on. Emptying the Cache does not seem to purge CSS file...

2 - Does not display the scroll bars for Dives that have the overflow set to “Auto” or “Scroll”

3 - Source code view looks like crap. Omni Web has the best source view of any browser I have ever seen!!! If it could be half as good as that, I would be a happy camper.

There are others, but these are my 3 main gripes for now….
Not bad for a Beta!!!
