vi / javac

Are you looking for an IDE?

Then try SunOne Studio or Netbeans.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

javac is pretty much the only compiler worth using - since any other compiler will probably introduce compatibility issues (at least of javac has a bug it and the code it generates have been through rigorous testing by Sun).

I use Project Builder to edit files, and sometimes BBEdit. On Windows I use Forte - it works very well. IDEA is also rather excellent, but pricey and doesn't work on OS X very well.

Why not Forte on OSX? I have used Forte aka SunOne Studio on OSX for ages. Works great.

IDEA is really great too. It's not free, but you can download a demo and try it for 30 days.

There is no such beast.

Though I like JBuilder. You can get it from Borland for free.
