Hello!

I'm sure I'm going to be flamed for posting
such trivial questions but the fact is that I'm
a bit overload by project builder's doc and
since I don't want to use all of its functionalities, I don't want to spend days
reading the doc...

So, I hope some of you could help me...

Project builder is a bit too complicated for me.
I'd just like to use it as a code editor (but don't want to actually build a project : I just need a good editor and the terminal does the rest)

So, is there a way to :

Given a directory full of code source, can I
just see the list of the files on the left
window, and open files _in the same editor
window_?

It seems to me that I have to create a project,
(or else files get opened in a new window)
but that's not want I want to do : I just need
a 'one window editor'... Hmmm, Am I making
sense here?

Otherwise, I guess I'll end up using emacs...

Anyway, thanks for reading this and if it
sounds a bit too ridiculous to you, don't
answer, but please, don't flame...

See ya!

It sounds like a reasonable enough question to me, but unfortunately, that's just not what Project Builder does. The file listing doesn't list directories--it lists groups within your project, which don't necessarily have any relation to the files' actual locations in the file system.

The closest you can probably get is to pretend it works the way you want. Just make a project, empty it out, and then drop a folder of files into the list. It should have basically the same effect. The listing won't automatically update if you change the contents of the folder, but all you'd have to do is just drop it into PB too. That seems like it might be good enough, if not ideal.

Out of curiosity, though, why don't you want to use Project Builder for compiling, too?

I don't think there's a way to do this in PB without creating a project. But you could do this: create a "dummy" project and store it wherever you like. Drag the folder of files you'd like to edit into the left pane of your new project. Edit in one window from the list to your heart's content.

Hello!

Thank you for your answer. I tried your
suggestion and, while it is true that
it's not ideal, it's good enough.

Why don't I want to use PB for
compiling? Well, to tell you the truth,
I'm used to good old text editors a la
emacs, and PB looks very complicated. Oh
I tried to read the doc, mind you, but
never had enough courage to learn it :-)

Also, I'm using Ant for my targets.
Well, I guess there's probably a way to
make it work with PB...

Anyway, do you know any good editors for
Mac OS X? I tried several but was never
really satisfied...

- Sure, emacs is here but the keyboard
shortcuts interfere with Mac OS X ones.
(I tried to remap the shortcut with
emacs but... Well, if you tried, you
know what i mean :-)

- Don't like Jedit.
- Netbeans would be fine if it wasn't
that slow.
- Vim? Well, I might as well learn PB...

No, really I can't find any good (and
free...) code editors. Also, am I the
only one to prefer non aliased fonts?

Anyway, thanks for your help!

BBEdit, though it's not free...

BBLite is, though. Haven't tried it.

I'll second the vote for BBEdit. It's the best text editor I've used on any platform, followed closely by vim.

Just wanted to add that Project Builder's strength is not its text editor. So if you really want to use a good text editor, look elsewhere.

BBEdit Lite has a really annoying "feature". They've disabled the Hide command, so there is no way to hide the application.

I appreciate the fact that these guys have to make money, but I can't afford what they're asking for a text editor and there is no way I'm going to use crippleware like the lite version.

Can't you just option-click on the desktop or another application to hide it?
