Hi,

My app creates files with an extension that is used by someone elses program. The result is if you try to open one of my files, the other program launches. If I change the extension in Project Builder, my app no longer opens files created with the previous file extension.

Can someone please advise. It seems like I need to change the file extension that my app creates, but I want to ensure backward compatibility.

If it helps, I filed a creator code with Apple.

you can right-click on the file you are trying to open and select ope-with. The choose the correct app to open it. You can also set the default app to open the file with.

Why not just make the old filetype read-only?

There's quite a bit of information on this in Apple's Document-Based Applications FAQ. Take a look at "How can I support read-only types?" and "How can I support reading a type and (internally) automatically converting to another?"

That sounds like the sort of thing you're looking for.
