WTF?

I just finished three days of downloading the December 2002 Developer Tools, over a dial-up connection (4 KB a second max.), using Transmit.

It seems to have finished... except that the file I have is too large:

Dec2002DevToolsCD.dmg.bin on my computer = 301.45 MB (316'094'699 bytes)

Dec2002DevToolsCD.dmg.bin on Apple's FTP server = 301.29 MB (315'922'432 bytes)

I can expand said file, which gives me a Dec2002DevToolsCD.dmg file, 301.29 MB (315'922'255 bytes) in size.

However, I can't mount said disk image. Whenever I try to, I get the message "Disk Copy helper unexpectedly terminated." and Disk Copy closes without mounting the disk image.

Why isn't it working? Is the disk image the correct size? Do I need to trim the extra 172'267 bytes from the .dmg.bin file? How would I go about doing this? Or is it some other problem?

Thanks,
Simon

I just tried mounting the disk image on my girlfriend's iBook and got a different reason for it not working:

"Dec2002DevToolsCD.dmg" failed to mount due to error 95. (no mountable file systems)
Help?

I know you won't think much of this response, but:

$20 will get you a CD from Apple in less time than it will take you to redownload it. This method is gauranteed to work.

Nope, don't think much of it

First, they're free, and I'm loathe to pay for anything I don't have to.

Second, I've already got them! Or at least a file purporting to be them... Which is too large... So I've actually got more than them...

Please, does anyone know how I can get this disk image to mount?

Maybe it's corrupt? Try using "hdiutil verify <diskimage>" at the terminal.

I did that and got this:

Code:
hdiutil: verify: "/Dec2002DevToolsCD.dmg" has no checksum.
Is there any way I can give it a "checksum"? Or is it hopelessly screwed up?

Thanks,
Simon

I just remembered something that might have some bearing on the corrupt disk image...

Because various servers would time-out when I was downloading the file over dial-up (I had to reconnect every two hours because of my ISP) I used the Asia Pacific, Japanese, USA 1 and USA 2 servers to download the .dmg.bin file. I assumed it was the same file on each server... But, if they were different files, might this be why the disk image is corrupt? Transmit let me resume the file each and every time, didn't complain that they were different...

Might this be there is no checksum? Can I add one?

There was an option to download 10M chunks of the total. That's what I did and mounted perfect.

Downloading dev tools over dialup is insane. Email me your address and I'll burn you a copy and mail it to you at no charge (assuming you're in the US). I get blanks for nearly free with rebate, so my only cost is postage, which I will pay to keep you from torturing yourself any further.

Alternately, you could go to an Apple Store and get a copy for free there. Just bring a blank CD-R.

I saw it, but passed it up on account of not wanting the hassle...

Thank you, but I am not in the USA; Location: Nodnol being a Red Dwarf thing, London (UK, not Canada) spelt backwards.

This occurred to me, but, being in England, there are no Apple Stores. Does anyone know if MicroAnvika, or somewhere like that, will give me a copy?

And and, all might not be lost; somone I know recently bought a PowerBook, so I'm hoping it came with the December Tools. I'll find out on Saturday.

But, from the replies so far, I'm assuming that the 300MB file I downloaded was a waste of time? Pah.
