I'm working on an intranet project, where we offer individuals a number of services, one of them being a diary/blog/.plan - type of thing.

Having read the .plan - files of various developers, I've grown curious about the origin and usage of this type of log. Unfortunately, searching for .plan is tedious enough, as all the engines I tried drop the dot.

I'd really appreciate any pointers to finding a definition, history or other info regarding it - both out of curiousity and because there just might be good stuff that could enrichen the tool we're building.

TIA,

J

.plans were originally a UNIX thing. Every user on a mainframe would have a .plan file which would house whatever project description they wanted. Other users on that mainframe could see the .plan, as well as other info, by typing finger username.

If you had consulted the jargon file, you would have known the concept of .plan is older than that. BTW UNIX got its start on mini-computers, not mainframes.
