How many domains can a G4 webserver hold or serve? I'm currently hosting 5 different sites with 5 different domain names that get about 100 hits a week each. Is this wise? If I wanted to host more domains should I get another G4 server or what? Thanks for any info.

If they are straight HTML (no database or streaming of video/audio content) you should be able to host more than that without a performance problem.

If you want to do some analysis, look at software that simulates a heavy load and see how your server holds up.

Our hosting service splits the webserver and database server onto separate machines and they host more than 70 sites on one server (virtual hosts) with many of them receiving heavy traffic. Even if they have a high-end server (i.e. they're running from linux and likely its not a sun or other server/class machine) - you should be able to serve plenty of sites from your machine.

Make sure you have maxed the RAM and have large/fast drives. RAM isn't actually so important for just serving static pages, but helps with DB queries and if you're using modules with your apache server.

I use some old Macs running OS 8.6 for some of my serving needs. They're on a 192kbps DSL line and they do just fine. One of them is a G3, the others are old 604s. They do just fine.

Database calls and server-side scripting like PHP are the most demanding things web servers have to do. Simply serving up HTML and images is mostly a network-intensive task. It doesn't require much power from the server since all it has to do is send a file down a network pipe.

Well, it is a Dual 500 G4 with a gig of ram. I'm planning on running a larger 10,000+ hit a week website with plenty of server side includes to process forms and whatnot. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for all the advise!

It will work well.

Assuming you only get traffic for 8 hours on five days a week, that's only 250 hits an hour or 4-1/6 hits per minute. Even with intense database calls, includes, and PHP, a dualie with a gig of RAM should work well.

100 hits a week? That's nothing. A commodore 64 could handle that. (ok, kidding, but it probably could.. heh). My point being, You could probably host a few thousand domains on your machine if they only got 100 hits/week each.

Anyone remember that site hosted on a Mac Plus? I think that got more hits than that and didn't complain

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.
