I have been using PHPWebSite for a site and I do like the customizability but there is a lack of modules for it. I've been looking at PHP-Nuke and I like some of the features I see but the customizability isn't there.
I've used PostNuke, which I think is programmed such that you are more likely to customize it to your needs. It still has a learning curve (as all systems will).
The modules and integration of new functionality seems fairly straightforward.
I like Zope (http://www.zope.org/). It's really very cool. THe learning curve is nontrivial, but it's a lot more object-oriented than PHP. Also, with ZEO and/or Mounted Client Storage, you can share your object store and software deployment across multiple hosts and application server instances.
