I'm in the progress of analysing the possibility to develop an equation editor. For this editor I could use either MathML or LaTeX. The editor should be able to just type and modify equations without having to type mathml- or latex-code.

I have been thinking about how to implement it (probably in java) and was wondering what your thoughts were about it. There don't seem to be any existing open-source library which deals with equations, so I guess it would be a project which has to start from scratch...

thoughts anyone?

I don't have any clues about this, but you might want to look at www.mathmagic.com just to have a look at another product. You can download their demo. It looks to be more fully featured than Equation Editor, but the icons/buttons are very similar, which suggests to me that there are standard interface elements and methods available somewhere.

Have you checked www.sourceforge.net? They may have an equation editor already in progress. You could contribute rather than starting from scratch.

Also look at LyX (www.lyx.org). This is an X application with either XForms or Qt front end. It's got an excellent equation editor which Microsoft ripped off for theirs in Word, and generates (indirectly) LaTeX code.

It's open source (and C++), so have a look.
