Hi.
Bear with me here ... I've never done this stuff so speak reaaaaalllly slowly please.

I'm trying to set up InvisionBoard BBS on my server (external, i pay for webspace) but have run into a few problems. InvisionBoard uses PHP and mySQL with a web admin setup. EasySpace.co.uk is my crappy host who never replies to my pleas of help.

I've tried to setup the board using the included admin but i keep getting:

- - -
Warning: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111)
- - -

I tried using phpMyAdmin but that can't connect to the database either and i get a similar error.

I've also tried using stand-alone clients like CocoaMySQL and YourSQL but those won't work because they make it look like im logging in from "my_username@my_dsl_ip_address" so i get denied access.

I know PHP is running with mySQL because there is an example script on my server "dbexample.php" which is pulling data from something.

Finally, i tried to use the terminal to use the "mysql -u etc" commands, but i didn't really know what i was doing or if that was right.

If someone has suggestions or can point me to something that explains this problem i would be eternally grateful. This is driving me crazy and i fear spending the whole weekend on not getting anywhere.

Thanks so much!
jef

have you looked at the source of this script? use it to see what your connection parameters should be...host, username, and password.

Thanks for the reply. Yes i did see those before in the script and those are the parameters i've been using in the web and stand-alone admins to attempt connection.

Is there a way to change parameters or affect mySQL from ssh? Thanks.

Sometimes when you are running mySQL on a server that you rent the connection parameters should be entered in some special way. For example on the server (where my stuff is), even though I have a username (lets just call it username), I still had to enter my connection parameters in a special way. Here is an example for my connection:

Host: localhost
DBUserName: username_dbuser1
Password: password
DBName: username_dbname1

I basically had to create a db user, which is called dbuser1. Then create a database, which is called dbname1. Of course the password is the db connection password. But as you can see my username had to be somethnig specific, so as my db name.

I would try to contact your webhost and as them how to connect to their mySQL database.

I hope this helps,

Good luck,

t
