I was wondering, if I create a template in Dreamweaver that includes the navigation bar with rollover images, would different pages be able to have different rollover states without disconnecting them from the template?

I'm probably not explaining this very well. Let's say my navigation bar has three buttons: A B, and C. Each button has a rollover state and links to a corresponding page. When you are viewing page 'A' I would like the 'A' button in the nav bar to stay in the rollover state, and have no associated link. The same with pages 'B' and 'C.'

Would a template prevent me from doing this? If I have to make every button an editable area there's almost no point in having a template.

i wouldn't say "no point" at all. far from it!

if the rest of the layout is the same on each page, then there's no reason you shouldn't have the main navigation area as an editable region, then use php (or perl) includes (nav_a.inc, nav_b.inc, etc), to pull your navigation into the page. that way, if you make a change to the rest of the page design, you only have to change the template.

that's what templates are for

No, I like templates for that very reason, but in this case, the page is essentially just a nav bar. Not much else to it, really.

I've found that, if I use a template, I can open a page with BBEdit and make a couple changes, and Dreamweaver still thinks it's connected to that template. BUT...as soon as you change the template you lose whatever changes you made in the code.

So I guess, in this case, there's really no reason for a template, right?

sounds like it, if there's not much else to the page

Agreed. Just thought I'd check, though. I'm still a big fan of templates.

Cheers.
