Well, since a patch, in this context, is more or less another word for a change you might as will ask: does anyone know how to make a CHANGE?
The process of making a change to an application can be very different from application to application, and very dependant on what type of change you're trying to make. There's no standard process like: Press cmd-alt-P, select the application you want to patch and type in the change you want to make. Some applications require that you have the source code and rebuild the application, others allow you to make changes to configuration files and/resources without a recompile.
If the application is built with explicit support for skinning there should be some documentation on how to create and apply a new skin. If not you might be out of luck. It's more likely that someone could help you if you could state the application you're trying to skin, and the nature of the changes you would like to make.

It's funny, when an artist needs help they are awfull demanding, but if you ask them for some artistic help, you have to fill out forms, pay fees, and sign over your spleen.
Why isn't there any open source art?

How about contacting the developer of the application? They'll invariably find out about any unauthorized "patching" anyway...

hehehe... it's for MacICQ, do you think I'll get an answer If i tried to contact them!? Anyway... here's some more info. BTW, thanks TOBLI for that explanation, it's more or less about replacing resource files and adding some new resource files. It can be done with resedit and resorcerer, but I would like to have it automated and function as an installer like thing.
Okay... here's the deal... It's about MacICQ. I really really get upset when I use that program, but it's GUI is just plain ugly. They gave us some customization with the background changing and all that, but that doens't get rid of those freakin' sounds and more irritating: THE SPINNING HEAD! After searching the internet a while ago for skins for MacICQ I came up with a few... never had any real luck with finding a good one. So I decided to 'hack' MacICQ myself and got right on it. And now my skin is nearly finished... I haven't replaced all icons, because I'm not great with graphics. I used a lot icons from the internet and ideas from discontinued projects. They are work like crap, with no installer, forcing people to use resedit to install it. They won't do it, because it gets to confusing.
I'm focusing the skin on version 3.2b21 of ICQ and I made some modifications in the Application as well in ICQ Resources. This results in two altered files, which modified resources and added resources. I would like to have an installer or patcher to replace the files. The old one should go into an ORIGINALS folder and the new ones should be in place of the old ones... This can be done by installers and or patchers, but I honestly don't know how. I found some installer makers on the internet, but I think they are quite comprehensive to make them work right. I hope you all get the idea now, if you need to know anything more... please.. just ask.
ICQ version 3.2 is carbonized and so I would like to have a carbonized installer or at least one that can make an installer for OS9 and OSX. [you can read 'and/or patcher' along with installer in that last sentence]
Thanks!
I really need to speed up this project, because I have only made my version for 3.0x sort of public, but I've got 3.2b5 running smoothly here and 3.2b21 is almost finished. I need to keep up! lol!
EDIT: I just LOVE this smilye -->>
