How to get the J2EE packages (JMS, JNDI, JMX, JTA/JTS) without installing JBoss? Can I get them somewhere separately?

Well, you can either use the reference implementations (from sun) or use the implementations in JBoss (you can just extract the jboss-j2ee.jar or similar).

You may also want to look at JRUN4. The dev version is free.

We use WebLogic at work, so I grabbed the one from Weblogic. You can download WebLogic for free from their web site. You'd need a license to actually run WebLogic, but not to use the J2EE jar file (called j2ee12.jar).
