Hello,
I'm working on a project at work (UW) to make custom restore DVD-Rs for some 12" PowerBooks we just bought. To this end I've been hacking away at the restore disc that comes with the PowerBooks.
Method 1:
I was hoping I could set up the 12" PB, boot it into firewire target disk mode, and use PackageMaker to make one big package for the entire drive. Then, edit /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg/Contents/Info.plist removing all of the packages and adding my own in. Everything works fine for this method except the one big package. After creating the .pkg in PackageMaker, I have a file that is the right size (2 - 3 GB uncompressed), but if I open it in Pacifist its only show there being 3 files: .DS_Store, .hidden, and .Trashes folder totaling 6.2KB. So, can anyone tell me what's going wrong in PackageMaker? I've installed the Dec 02 DevTools, so it should be the latest version.
Method 2:
I already have an perfectly working ASR .dmg of the PowerBook, so if I could use CLI version of ASR to the disc. Then make a small almost empty package that contains a post_install script that runs the restore.
Method 3:
Copy the GUI version of ASR (Software Restore) to the disc. Edit the /etc/rc.cdrom file so that it launches Software Restore (GUI) instead of Installer.app.
Methods 2 & 3 are untested. Yes, I know there are methods that are easier for those who are IT inclined, but this restore disc is being designed for use by student helpers who are use to using our completely automated ASR OS 9 restore discs. So, I'm looking for idiot proof-ness (which excludes Carbon Copy Cloner w/ FireWire drives). I want them to just be able to click through menu prompts at the most. Also, network restores are NOT an option as we work in a building with an overworked T-base-10 network and asbestos walls (i.e. not upgrade-able).
