There are many ways to get try and up your traffic. Number one would be to take care that your keywords and description META tags are properly filled out (and that they sort of match the contents of the page they are tags of). Number two is probably entering your site in any search engine you can think of. Google to begin with, then the Open Database thing. Altavista, Yahoo, ... There are services offering to do enter your site to 50 search engines for free. You never know what it's worth, I tried one of those, and I can't really complain, though I didn't notice a soaring pick-up in hits. (of course, the site I'm talking about is VERY specific, so I don't really expect 1000 hits a day).

Then, you should realise that many search engines rank your site also as to how many times it is linked to. (Google!) So it's a good idea to do some name and link dropping around the web, have others link to you if you can get them to. Don't go spamming though. Nobody likes a spammer.

Also, I hear Google is now ranking valid HTML/XHTML and so on sites higher than non-valid sites, so you might want to take care there are no 'errors' in your code. It's always a good idea to have the services at W3C.org validate your site.
