Be warned that Apple's gcc != FSF gcc. Although you may be able to compile/use it, you'll lose some Apple extensions.

Do you know if Apple going to integrate their extensions into the GCC codebase at some point? I don't see why the would not since (i would assume) Darwin includes the source for Apple modified GCC.

Apple really does need to integrate things with the rest of the world. It would be nice to have Ada and FORTRAN, which are part of the gcc.
The folding@home project could use a boost from an AltiVec-enhanced FORTRAN compiler and it would seem not such a large leap that Apple's back-end would accomplish that. Adding their Objective-C++ hack as a front-end would be great for other platforms and might bring consistency to development everywhere.

folding@home is good for you.

Apple is seriously working on integrating all of the apple-only changes into the fsf gcc, so stay tuned...
