I don't get it really... whats so great about them? Are they a standard size like 88X31 ones you always see? Or is someone just starting something?

As I understand it, the appeal of these buttons is that they are extremely small, both in terms of screen space and file size, and yet they are very easy to recognize. Some people have, in fact, taken it upon themselves to recreate these buttons using nothing but HTML and CSS; this can't be done for the buttons that include pictures, of course, but for many of the buttons it works fine.
The craze actually started with the Validator buttons. It seems to have spread from there.
