I am trying to make a image map that is transparent i want to use a:hover in order to change the backgound color to change is that possible using a image map? or do i have to split the image up and do it individual? any suggestions? that conforms to XHTML 1.0?

Haven't used imagemaps for a few years now but I'm pretty sure you're gonna have to split your image up I'm afraid to do what you want it to do.

Actually having re-read your post - I not sure exactly what you're trying to do. Can you explain a bit clearer the effect you're trying to achieve and why you want to be using imagemaps to set the background colour of something (irregular shapes I suppose)

you probably need to split it up. dreamweaver has a plugin which will help with the hover animations. if you don't you might be able to achieve a similar results with hidden layers, but that route would be more trouble then it's worth.
