There's no need or compelling reason to remove the built-in apache kit from the default OS install. It's best to leave it be, undisturbed and untouched as future updates may expect its presence. Also, it's good to have a fallback in case you decide to stop running Apache 2 at some point in the future.

I dunno...
Just be rid of it - if you're not using it, then why have it installed? And if you're the sort of user who can install Apache 2 for Mac OS X then I'm sure you're the sort of user who can reinstall Apache 1.3 if the going got tough

cheers for the advice, I'll probably just leave it on. Nice little package from server logistics, but still need to go through httpd.conf to configure it all the way you want.

I'm going to delete it now, lol. I sorted out the other issue of starting apahe 2 through terminal, or the sharing pane, it used to default to 1.3.x, but now have it set for version 2.

are you using the "newer must be better" train of thought here, or does Apache 2 really offer some new-fangled feature(s) that you're gagging to use?
i'm just interested to know why you're making the switch (as, i'm sure, are others)

Apache 2 *does* have some significant features for someone who knows web serving.
If you don't have a high-volume site and don't know what the differences are don't bother.
Apache 2 has better memory handling, multithreading (for faster/smoother serving on high volume sites) and many additional enhancements.
For most people, I'd say stay away from patching your system with Apple 'unsupported' software because when they make updates you'll be SOL.

Also fixes some security issues, such as DOS attacks. I've got a slow voluem site but love to just keep up with the technology, tinkering away for no reason. i'm weird that way.
