Hey all, I am interested in programming for the Macintosh platform. I have dabbled in a little java, perl, etc. but all for the PC. Is there any good places for tutorials about AppleScript, or whatever? If not, does anyone recommend any book to get started? I am primarily interested in having my program interface with iChat if possible? I am unclear about AppleEvents, and where to get them, etc. I just need a good beginner tutorial or reference.

I am willing to learn whatever language needed. I am a Computer Engineering major in college, but I am the only one with a Mac.

Sincerely,
Mel

Glad to have you on board. So you're the only one with a Mac, ah? Unless you are doing Windows development you made a great choice! There's a very broad range of work that you can undertake on your Mac.

First you need to get a hold of the latest Apple Developer Tools. These are free from Apple. You also may want to join the Apple Developer Connection. There's a free option available.

As far as books goes, it depends on what framework you will developing on i.e., Cocoa, Carbon or Java.

For an absolute Cocoa beginner, I recommend:

"Learning Cocoa with Objective C" By Apple Computer, Inc._, James Duncan_Davidson

For Java on MacOSX I recommend:
"Mac OS X for Java Geeks" By Will_Iverson

For AppleScript and other stuff, I'm sure some else on the forum will give you a tip. That's not my bag. In the mean time here are some links:

http://www.apple.com/developer/

http://cocoadevcentral.com/articles/...are_basics.php

Enjoy!

Great! I already got the Developer tools installed and what not, for compiling unix programs that I download. I am not doing windows development at the moment, so it's pretty cool that i can take up my interest. Maybe I should start with Java, because that's easy and I know it (but havent messed with it since 1.2)

If anyone has any info on AppleScript, that'd be great.

Sincerely,
Mel

Applescript documentation is sadly lacking, but a google search should turn up something. Java would be an excellent place to start. It's improved a LOT since 1.2, and works very well with OSX.

O'Reilly has a bookshelf, where you can rent the books for $10 bucks a month, 2 week free trial. I like it so far. I started reading Mac OS X for Java Geeks.
