Be linked from many different places, especially sites that are linked from many different places. It increases the perception that your site is important and frequented by many people, which will float you to the top of the search engine.

This really is the killer for Google and several others.

Unfortunately this is the case. WHile it can be good, often it is hard to get a 'legitimate' site to the top, simply because so many other sites link to the old one.
