Hi.

My boss has an idea for an application. We have a programmer who will write the app, but he has no interest in how the program looks whatsoever.

Enter me. I am a graphic designer, have never done anything like this before, but I made a couple of "sketches" in photoshop that my my boss loved. The problem is, this app is pretty big, with a lot of different tools and so on. If I had to draw all these in Photoshop pixel by pixel it would take forever.

So what is the quickest/best way to draw the layout? I know about Interface Builder, but that requires a lot of programming skills doesn't it? Please help me out here. Thanks.

Just do your interface mockup with Interface Builder. It doesn't take alot of programming know how if you just want to use IB to do an interface mockup. It's all a bunch of drag and dropping of the controls you want and placing them on the default window.

If you don't want to install the dev tools you could instead download RealBasic and do your mockup in that instead.

Info on UI design (for programmers, but it's good advice anyway): http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook...000000057.html

Use Interface Builder. It's really fun

I would suggest just taking screenshots of the elements you want to use and then building it in Photoshop. IB can easily get you interested in other things far too quickly.

Thanks guys, tried interface builder and it looks good so far.
Do you know how you add a list of folders with a hierarchy, á la the mail mailbox list?
That's the only thing I couldn't figure out after a couple of hours with it. This is a good program, it seems Apple is making things simple even for developers

I believe you're looking for an outline view. It should be pretty easy to find in the Interface Builder but you won't be able to populate it with your own data very easily unless you dive into the code, even then it's not trivial. Sorry I can't be more specific but I haven't touched a Mac for about 2 months
