Anybody know of a way to do a basic rollover using HTML only (its for an HTML email). Cant find anyway of doing it without Java.
Anybody know, even if the answer is a definite NO i would be most obliged

Depends, you can do them with CSS, but I would have thought an email client would be more likely to support JS than CSS. Anyways, have a look at meyerweb.com for JS free mouse-over effects

Javascript is something totally different than Java.

i'd already be annoyed to be receiving that email, if it was all bloated out with rollover images. when sending html mail, you should always think of the lowly 56k-er. i'm on a 1Mb line, so i don't care, but they will. i only ever use a maximum of about 40k worth of images and some html/css. it looks just as good, and gets your point over. if you want the real fancy stuff, offer a link to a web page. the recipients will thank you for it.

so its looking like a no to image rollovers in email clients then, as the meyerweb stuff seemed to be about rollover effects with html?

...as a general rule, if you're trying to maximize your users' ability to receive an html email and get consistent results in all mail viewers (aol, hotmail, yahoo, netscape, outlook...), stick to straight html. no css, no javascript. many of the new readers have these capabilities, though many are limited to one capacity or the other...
