Hello Mac Addicts - I have been making a living building application for the x86 platform for over 20 yrs., and for the Windows World since Windows 1.0. It has not always been fun, but for the most part it has been profitable. I write in C++ and Visual Basic, and yes I have tried Java.
Here is my dilemna ... I would love to switch to the Mac platform, but 85% of my development is for the WinTel market, the remaining is Web Development(ASP.NET) with SQL Server in the back-end. Has anyone tried to do commercial Windows Development within Visual Studio.Net running the Virtual PC emulator? If so, how was the performance compared to a similar clockspeed Intel box?
I posted on the Apple boards and was referred here. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Honestly, why not just get two machines? Keep your current PC to do .Net dev, and get a Mac to do everything else.
VPC is fairly slow on my 1GHz Powerbook, but I imagine it would almost be snappy on a dual 2GHz G5... I guess we'll see soon. Which Mac are you thinking of?

I used to run VC6 and VB on VirtualPC 5 with Windows 2000, on my 400mhz pismo under OS9 a few years ago. It didn't run too bad, but then I wasn't doing commercial development.

Thanks for the reply. I have been a huge fan of the Powerbook since its inception, and if I go with multiple machines I would probably lean in that direction. I have several PCs now that perform specific duties such as testing my commercial apps under different versions of Windows but was really looking hard at dual processor G5 for my everyday machine. Any problems with opening Window's Office files with the Mac Office?

Thanks for the reply. I may just take my Visual Studio.Net DVD down to the Apple store here and see if they will load it on a machine there and just see how it runs. My biggest concern is whether Virtual PC will support the .Net Framework which is another layer on top of the OS, and is required by any program doing anything in .Net.

Well, since VPC is a hardware emulator, assuming that your OS of choice is supported, then it shouldn't matter what frameworks you layer on top of that. ah, the wondewrs of layered abstractions!
and no, there is no problem between Office X and Office XP.
