A few problems with free sites:
Pop-up or any other advertising on the site
Bandwidth limitations
Free space for files is limited
If you aren't going to have a huge site and don't mind banners or ads, they aren't so bad.

Sometimes they try to force you in to buying a hosting plan from them.

Hostrocket.com is one provider that does offer free space accounts without advertising and pop-ups. However, these accounts take a back seat in priority to the paying accounts, and are somewhat unreliable. Sometimes its just worth it to get a $10 a month hosting plan.

If you're going to really put effort into your site, I'd say it's worth it to shell out the $15-20 for a .com address and then pay for cheap hosting. I pay $8 a month, and I know you con even get it for less than that. It's just worth it.

Search google for web hosting directories
there are lots of small web hosts out there, and amazingly there are quite a few places to get free hosting without any ads
take a look at:
http://www.clickherefree.com/cgi-bin...amp;Active=Yes
to see all free hosting solutions which offer you a subdomain and have php and perl available as well as no ads.

thanks clam 2000 thats really valuable and sorry about my fishy title but I did't quite know which forum I should begin my query forays into "the internet" discussion what I mean is:Should have I launched these cursory beginers questions in "the lounge" or here ?
Anyway are affiliate programs worth getting into or avoiding at all costs ?
the reason I ask is because I'm looking for ways to start an income flow without spending too much, indeed, any money...this is largely because euphemistically we all hear about how there is money to be made on the internet
I have spent a considerable time already cruising the web looking for work as a telecommuter, but these offers seem to be on the lean side down here in ozland which is rather peculiar because there seems to be an overwheling amount of press on this subject both here but more particularly in the US ?

Another thing about having a real host: addon domains. These are domain names that resolve to a directory on your host, meaning run multiple sites on the same account. I pay ~$8/month for my host and I also host a site for a company I developed for and charge $8/month to them for hosting fees. It's a deal for both of us Of course, I have to pay additional for each addon domain, but for now I basically get free hosting..

If you shop around, you can get your domain for under $9/year (I use GoDaddy, there are others though), and get your hosting for $50/year on a Linux hosting company.
Another alternative is to buy a static IP from your cable/DSL company and run it out of your house. That's what I do for my low-bandwidth sites.

There isn't really money to be made on the net anymore, in the sense of starting out with no capital and no effort. Affiliate programmes won't hurt, but I doubt they'll make you any money either.
If you want to make money on the net, it'll probably need to be your full time job, and you'll have to look into finding a niche. Try offering your services in an area where there isn't much competition. The other things you could try are buying and selling on ebay (there's a lot of risk, but if you can cope with that you could make a bit) or finding something of your own to sell. Are you a graphic artist? Maybe you could advertise online and show examples, so people can commission you.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.
