Hi All,
Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
I am looking to start developing a web site for my wifes business and a friends. Nothing too fancy right now.
Now I have done web development before on the PC platform and used Dreamweaver, SQL, Interdev, etc.. the regular stuff. Now I have a Mac and would like to do all the development on my Cube.
So what programs should I be using?
Eventually I would need to setup a database and be able to handle credit card transactions but for now it would not be necessary.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

you can use Dreamweaver, mySQL, PHP & OS X's built-in Apache web server. not much different than working on a PC, really. apart from stability
you can get the installers for PHP & mySQL from their respective sites, but you might also want to check out www.entropy.ch/software/macosx for some additional info, before hand

Great!
Its always easier to start with something you know
The PC development drove me bonkers until they went with 2000 and gave me 1GB of RAM, settled down after that
With regards to setting up credit card transactions is that an easy thing to integrate into a Dreamweaver site? Are there any recommended ways to setting this up?
Thanks for the link, will be checking it out.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Hi All,
The work is progressing quite nicely and it was a lot easier then I thought working on the Mac side
Still have a quick question though.
I would like to have credit card processing on the site. Now I have a merchant account setup. What else do I need to get it going? Are there any free apps that I can add to the site that will do this for me? or do I purchase one?
Anybody who can point me in the right direction, it will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

try the Macromedia Exchange. there might be an extension you can use to just drop that kinda thing right in

You need a processing gateway that basically "sits" between your website and the merchant account to securely process the transaction. The two big ones are VeriSign and Authorize.Net. I've used both, and VeriSign offers the advantage of using a basic system where the transaction is processed on their secure server and you simply link to it from your site. However, Authorize.Net is far more customizable, if you know PHP, ASP, or JSP.
The gateway you select will determine the method of implementation into your site. For example, if you want a shopping cart mechanism, both providers have "recommended" solutions that are approved to work with their gateways.
