I was wondering if there has been any resolution on if/how to get java 3d to work on os x? i searched and saw that it was discussed several years ago, but nothing seemed to have worked then and i am wondering if anyone knows about now?

thanks!

I think Sun is deprecating Java3D in favour of JOGL. JOGL is a Java API for OpenGL. Mac OS X has full support for OpenGL, and JOGL works perfectly on it.

Here's an intro article from java.net that should get you started:

Jumping into JOGL

Amazing stuff.

Ha? Well this is interesting... It can actually reignite much needed enthusiam for Java on the desktop. It seems pretty cool, thanks for bringing that up. It also appears that Apple won the 3D chicken game with Sun -not with QT but with OpenGL. Good stuff!

Damn cool that JOGL stuff. Should be fun for beginning 3D coders who have don't know C or Carbon. OpenGL also provides a way of doing graphics far faster than the usual AWT or Swing stuff.

Simply put: --This is cool! Thanx for sharing the link!

Seriously, this is groundbreaking. Java has needed this for a long time.

I was very interested, so I followed the links and did some reading. There are some serious problems in the OSX version for Jaguar and WWDC Panther. These problems are expected to be resolved in the final Panther release.

I just mention it because one of the problems is related to hardware acceleration, so performance will suffer until Panther comes out.
