When you apply your resume gets submitted to a recruiter. There are different recruiters for different departments/teams. If there is an opening (the job you applied for) and they are interested in hiring you, the recruiter will give you a call to setup an interview... then you go to the interview and answer questions like 'Describe a time you were 'surprised' and how you dealt with the situation'.
