I have Dreamweaver MX (not 04) and it's been driving me nuts. I was using it fine on my iMac; DW served me well for a while. Then when i try connecting to the server or Uploading Files it just says "waiting for server" for a few good minutes before saying the connection is lost. Usually it displays that message for only half/second. OK. So i got the G5 and: the same problem. I have 6 sites defined, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. BUT on my XP, with DW MX same everything, all the site info, same app version, everything, it uploads everything fine. Without a hitch. I also have high-speed internet.
It was fine on my mac until about a month ago. Whatever happened i have no idea, but if anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

i'd give up and use a dedicated ftp app, rather than the POS you get in Dreamweaver. it's never been much use.

Make sure you don't have the Firewall feature turned on in your system. The firewall will not allow the ftp responses to come back from the server. Other than that there is not much that can go wrong. I use Dreamweaver every day and have no issues.

Not sure why you find the DW FTP a POS. Works smooth for my sites - very handy just to be able to his Apple-Shift-U in Dreamweaver MX and have a revised file upload instantaneously.

(not that DW doesn't have lots of other areas for reworking of its code)
