I downloaded the August update because when I link to CURLHandle, gdb crashes (if anyone can help me with that, please do). The dmg passes Disk Copy's checksumming, but when I open the pkg file, Installer shows it's window for a second and then exits, without an error. I need help here. possibly related: Pacifist opens the pkg file but gives a -60007 error when trying to authenticate to install as root.

just to state the obvious, have you tried re-downloading the package? maybe it got garbled in the download... i've seen weirder things happen...

still doesn't work. Does Installer have preferences? I can't find anything in my prefs folder; maybe it has them in some unix place?

This is what the -60007 error means:

errAuthorizationInteractionNotAllowed = -60007, /* The authorization was denied since no user interaction was possible. */

No user interaction was possible - it could mean that Security Agent or possibly something in your system could be corrupt or missing, and if that could be affecting the Security Framework.

To test my theory, could you please try another app that uses the Security framework, such as MacJanitor, and let us know if it works?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

MacJanitor authenticates just fine

I just tried Pacifist again on another package, too, and it gave the same error as before, although I don't think I've ever tried to install that package either (an airport update from a while ago) so they might both be fubar

Well, that's certainly odd.

I assume that Pacifist is giving this error before the password panel appears?
