I want to redo my picture webpage so viewers can add their own comments to each pic. As you can see now, I've just added my own stupid comments. What I'd like is to have the pics how they are arranged now, or in a slideshow, with user's comments listed below. I'd also like a name to appear before the added text:

-pic-
Nick: I like this one...
Joe: Man, you are an idiot.

I know a database will have to be involved and that the forms will have to send the comments to the DB (with the webpage dynamically updating). I just have no idea on how to start. I have Dreamweaver MX - I'll probably need to buy some DB software...

I'm welcome to any ideas. If you have seen a page like what I'm imagining, please send me a link. Nick

You probably want some sort of blogging software. You could implement this yourself of course, but it might be easier to just find something that already works and modify it to suite your needs.

I assume of course that you have the ability to install software that you need (PHP, MySQL, etc) on the server.

I'm going to be using my campus server. I don't have a clue as to whether or not they'll let me use DB software.

I'm looking into Gallery. Thanks for the quick posts.

Turns out the university limits us from using dynamic pages. Any recommendations on a free webhost?

A free webhost that will give you disk space and bandwidth and also has php and mysql support? Nice try, but it ain't going to happen. You can probably find something that suits your needs for 5-10 dollars a month, though.

http://www.icdsoft.com/

$5/mo for 333MB of space with php/mysql/email

kinda sucks your uni won't do dynamic sites. I mean they could allow PHP and not mysql I would think. Unless they are using IIS, but even then there is a isapi dll.

I setup a gallery page on HostRocket.com for free.

Here's the link to my page: Picture Page 2.0

The colors are horrible - I have to play around with the CSS file.

I've been playing around with the settings, but for some reason I can't see the pics on the page. (The pics are on the hostrocket server though - I checked via FTP.)

HostRocket has PHP, but I don't know if they have MySQL - could this be the problem? I think I may be in too deep with this stuff - I'm just a newbie to dynamic pages.

You don't need MySQL for Gallery 1.4.x
It looks like you may have your root directories not setup correctly in your gallery configuration. Or you host may not have NetPBM or ImageMagick. Did the configure go thru without too many errors?

I have ImageMagick (the newest release) and config went through without many errors. I think I may reinstall Gallery on the server tonight. Maybe I missed something...
