I don't see this as a bad thing. If the author wants to unload his product, this could be an out.
Would you update the product if point release broke it, or would you just discontinue it?

I didn't see it as a bad thing in principle, either, but I doubt there are many authors of products with "ongoing sales" that would really like to just offload them, and the company (rampellsoft) sells spyware. Even if I did want to unload some random product, I wouldn't want to do it to a company that stoops that low
