It was someone here that pointed me in the direction of PEAR (php code depository or someit), and after spending a lot more time than I should have configuring the thing, I'm starting to enjoy its possibilities.
I've almost figured out the ins and outs of Quick_Form, although the "date" element needs some work, I was wonderng what other flavours had caught the imagination of those onboard here.
Doesn't seem to much in the way of a PEAR support forum as it goes.

Honestly, the only PEAR stuff I've really used is PEAR::DB, which is quite nice. I really ought to look at the other stuff.
Edit: damn smilies in my ::DB reference.

For obvious reasons, PEAR's DB class is simply essential - simple APIs, huge support and versatility.
The 'Tree' class is a lovely concept - being able to manage a tree structure with a simple DB storage mechanism with an extremely simplistic algorithm.
I'm still playing with HTML_Quickform and the HTML_Quickform_Controller - there some quirks with it that I'm not yet 100% happy with (like not having a 'cancel' button built into the Controller that bypasses the validation). I can certainly contribute to it, though!
Mail_Mime is essential, because I'm writing my own HTML eNews manager and it's so lovely and straightforward to use.
...and the Excel spreadsheet writer has also been a nice find!

Heh, that reminds me, my client wants a tool to transfer a word document into an e-mail magazine for a mailing list....
.....heads off to pear.php.net

I've written my own RTF converter if you're interested - send me a private mail if you need to know more...

Having spent almost an entire friday improving the "date" element, (making three drops downs that start on today's date, trying all the possibilities, learning about the syntax of php arrays and classes) I managed replicate the whole caboodle in 20 seconds after installing smarty.
Thanks for the offer Simon, not sure of formats, qua emails, yet, but will definately contact you if Word gets involved in the cms.
