Hey all. I am a computer engineering major, and decided to learn java. I took a grad level course that im in right now, but this class is real slow. I have a few books, Java Developer's Resource Copyright 1996, Sun Programmer's Exam Study Guide for Java 2, JDBC Oracle 9i, Object-Oriented Design in Java using java.util, Oreilly's Swing book, but none are good at explaining Applications with Awt. I see some Applets with AWT. I was just wondering if anyone can point me at the right direction with this, that'd be cool. Thanks

You should not be learning or using AWT at at all you should focus on Swing. AWT was a failed attempt to develop a rich cross platform framework.

Go to java.sun.com and look for the GUI Swing tutorial. The only thing you may use AWT for is for Save Dialogs as they are more native looking then the Swing ones.

Yes, but aren't there AWT containers that I need to use? I have a Java Swing book, but it seems like they just jump into components, and not how to put in a container to control the layout. I don't know if I'm making sense. LoL! Does Swing have different style containers, like GridBagLayout, etc.? Thanks for your time

You are talking about layout managers, yes some are awt.

Look here: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html

And specifically here:

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutor...swing/TOC.html

and for layout managers here:

And something else, there's a free development application called Eclipse (which is really good btw) and there's also a Plugin called "Visual Editor Plugin" which lets you create AWT or Swing applications with your mouse, just like MS Visual Studio or Apple's XCode.
