I have teamed up with some cats to put a news/politics website together. Right now we are hosting it on some web space I had lying around while we are building it and testing. The site is happy where it is for now, but eventually I'm hoping to grab a new host for it. I have three sites hosted on ipowerweb and I like them quite a bit, but I just stumbled upon this site which seems like it could either be too good to be true, or it could be a damn good deal. Is there a site with impartial reviews of web hosts?

hey axo, long time.

Of the four hosts I've dealt with, jaguarpc is my favorite in terms of reliability. They cost a bit more, but they're on the up and up.

anyhoo, http://www.findmyhosting.com/ is pretty good resource, it's not all-encompassing, but it's good to check out.

I've also heard a guy talk pretty favorably about http://www.dayanahost.com/ if you're looking for a cheap host.

After bad experiences with three of the (at that time) "top" hosting companies, I switched to Pair Networks (http://www.pair.com), and have been very happy with them. It's been five years now, and I host several sites with them.

IMHO, those "ranking" sites don't tell you the real story. I found Pair through a recommendation from a friend, and that's the best way to do it.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.

I like the 'smaller' companies. I found nyip.net through an irc chat, and have been happy as I can be. Shell access, all the database stuff, personal support, and being friends, they even do most of the heavy lifting for me.

I've hosted through aplus.net in the past. They're pretty reliable and if you have a problem, there's 24 hour tech support that a) has people answering the phone and b) the support reps speak English.

www.totalchoicehosting.com

Never had any problems and all of my questions have been answered within 20 minutes to 45 minutes at the most. They've also been extremely friendly and helpful and the uptime/speed of the site also rank high in my books.

I do a lot of consulting on the side, and I've had problems with several of the major providers. Earthlink and Interland in particular have been problematic and I would not recommend them.

I have been very impressed with http://www.javaservlethosting.com because they have plenty of bandwidth, they support java and PHP, and they run in a really nice redundant datacenter with very scalable bandwidth:
