developers,

I'm trying to reinstall OS X for several reasons. Obviously i need to backup any files i might need. What about Applications - can they be copied to a server and then copied back or do they need to be reinstalled from disk. Also how can i transfer all me preferences over - eg Safari bookmarks, web history etc.
