hey all...hope this post isnt redundant as i wasnt able to find a comprehensive breakdown of the basic places to start for getting into learning php and mysql.

I have several questions, but first here is my current config

"MDD" Dual 1ghz, 1.2GB ram, 700GB hd, etc...running 10.3.4

Is php and mysql functionality available through the terminal as far as installing a webapplication server. Currently the only web dev software I use is dreamweaver and I rarely go into much more than basic scripting in some of my websites.

I am looking into writing templates for an existing php web applications with a limited amount of actually working on the building process of the app. I will probably doing mainly GUI development from the design standpoint.

Help point me in the best direction to get started where I can learn the basics. Are there any third party software apps that I should install to help me work with the code other than dreamweaver. Basically, is there anything out there that makes it a breeze to just dive in?

What if anything is installed in the standard install of 10.3 that I should know about or might help me?

thanks in advance

hi

firstly, here's some dead easy install info for PHP & MySQL.

secondly, you could use a book or two, as it's not always the simplest thing in the world to get to grips with. try Foundation Mac OS X Web Development and/or Foundation Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. they'll help you tremendously, and hopefully make things a lot clearer. any questions about the books, ask, as i wrote the OS X one. (there you go, Simon and Chris, i mentioned it! ). they're both really easy to understand, and written in a way that won't blind you with jargon.

you already have Apache installed, which is the only web server you're going to need (at this stage).

that lot should get you started. Dreamweaver works nicely with PHP, and even shows your MySQL data live. you sound like you have a clear idea of your goal, which always makes things easier.

good luck, and happy coding

See, that wasn't so hard now, was it?

I can't really come up with any better recommendations... If you want a working knowledge of the code you're tinkering with, php.net and mysql.com have incredible references for their respective languages and there's a tonne of CSS tutorials and sites on the internet.

Check out the zen garden for some incredible examples of what can be done (plus, you can dive through the code to see how they did it too).

I think that diving in is always going to be quite difficult, but phils recommendations should definitely help a lot.
Just who are Britain? What do they? Who is them? And why?

yeah, i know. thanks, Jer.

for the record - not that i need to explain myself - i was asked to write it. so, i said Yes. the more astute of you will notice it's in the Foundation series, which means it's for people who want to dip a toe in and test things for themselves, before deciding whether to take things further and get a more in-depth book. it doesn't claim to churn out a genius at the end, and it doesn't claim to be 100% perfect. i wrote it in language that beginners can relate to, without going over their heads. if you have a problem with any of that, then post on my publisher's message board, or email me about it and i'll discuss it with you. no need to clutter this board up with off-topic ramblings.

i think the thread can go back on topic now. we were helping someone, right?

Sounds great, Philz!
(got any idea when Amz will actually *ship* the book - it's listed as "July 2004" and available for "pre-ordering" as opposed to "ordering"?)

"Publisher: Friends of ED"

PS: Who would "ED" be?

How do you test for layout compatibility between Mac and PC formating? Is there a program or site that will check your code and show you what your layouts will look like on Mac vs. PC?

Thanks,

James
