Hi everyone. I need help. I'm a graphic/web designer who has finally given in...and decided I REALLY need to learn php and mysql.

I am a complete novice at programming. I know enough html to look at the code and understand what its doing but haven't really "studied" html since 1997 -and html has changed a lot since then... I use Golive for most of my site design.

I've been looking for a php/mysql book for a while and there are just too many choices. Also, I don't host my own sites-I use hosting companies and most of them use php myadmin or similar. It seems that most books assume you are using windows apps and have your own server.

I need a book that will get me going on the basics with examples that actually work and is aimed at..or at least acknowledges mac users. (osx).

Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated.
thanks
mark

PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites: Visual QuickPro Guide

It's got a little Mac slant on it, and it even points you in the right direction to get php an mysql running in OS X.

It's a pretty decent place to start, though I'm certain there are far better tomes available to learn php from. This one will get you off the ground gently though.

Check out http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/webdbapps/index.html

Although the second addition, my googling skills temporarily failing me.

Haven't bought it myself, but have almost a dozen or so O'Reilly books within reach, many pertaining to mysql/php, and have yet to be disappointed.

whilst it doesn't specifically deal with PHP/mySQL i think you'll find that this book will provide all the guidance you ever need. i was going to say it's "the bible for the internet age" but this baby makes the bible [and the koran for that matter] look like the illiterate scrawlings of a thirteen year old on the walls of your local bus shelter. i only wish i could touch the hem of the author's robe!
