I feel like a moron, but if I don't ask now, I'll never find out-- how can you get a file to compile in Xcode? I'm not trying to do anything fancy, just trying to get one file to compile, but the entire Build menu is greyed out and inaccessible. These are mostly Java files, but I'm trying some C++ too. Right now I'm just using Xcode as an editor, and compiling through the darwin terminal, but that's just a pain, so I'd like to do everything in Xcode. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Have you made a project or are you just editing source files? iirc XCode will only compile projects. You'd be looking for java or C++ tool.

Just t expand, XCode does require that things be in "projects" to compile, but a project can have only a single code file in it. It requires the project structure because it stores a lot of its settings in files in the project folder.

So, to answer your question, make a project (there are templates for all kinds of projects), and copy your code into the default file it makes for you.

Next time you start a new program, make the project first.
