Sleep will never give you anything back. Sleep pauses - in your case 5 seconds.
As for ls, have you tried ls -a?
If ls by itself gives nothing, it means you have an empty directory (or everything starts with a period).
Try other commands like pwd, etc. You haven't given us much to go on here.
